How to beat cravings for heroin and other drugs:

Cravings for heroin will come and go, but they won’t go away by themselves – not without a fight. But there are some things that you can do now to beat those cravings and stay clean for good.
If you quit this drug with Suboxone, then it shouldn’t be that difficult to keep cravings down. And if you quit with the help of methadone then under normal circumstances you shouldn’t have any cravings at all. But if you did it cold turkey or warm turkey as well, then the cravings for heroin are going to come and go for the first few days, weeks, and months. But no matter how strong those cravings are, you my friend are stronger than that. |
You can beat this drug once and for all. Yes, you can quit heroin and stay clean for good, with or without treatment. Because no matter how you look at it, it’s you who’s going to beat those cravings and stay clean for good. It’s you who’s going to grind your teeth and force yourself to stay clean. You are your greatest resource. You are your greatest tool. And if you really want it, then you can do it. You can quit this drug, once and for all.
Battle your thoughts:
The first thing you need to do when those cravings start coming on is to start battling your thoughts right away.
The minute those cravings come, you need to start telling yourself aloud, “No no, no”, and then push those thoughts out of your mind right away. The minute those thoughts of using heroin come into your mind you have to tell yourself and tell your mind to “be quiet, don’t think about those things”, and then push those thoughts out right away. You may have to repeat this over and over again until those thoughts are gone and out of your mind for good, or at least for the time being. If you’re able to remain calm, then great. Relax and just sit still until the cravings go away. But if those cravings keep coming on strong then you need to force yourself to take action and do something to deter yourself right away. |
No one can do it for you. You have to do it yourself. You have to make yourself take action right away. And any kind of "I can do it" attitude is positive and will help greatly as well, (as long as it's kept in a balance). In other words, don't get too proud of yourself; for self-pride is mans' greatest foe. And life tends to resist the proud, but shows mercy to those who become and remain humble. But you can use whatever will power you have left to help you resist the urge to use. And any positive technique will help as long as it's empowering and not self destructive. Be strong, and stay in the battle.
Take a replacement drug:
The first strategy that most people use to counteract cravings for heroin is to substitute the heroin with a non-opiate, replacement drug.

Start walking and just keep on walking. Just a change in environment can help to deter you from giving in to dope.
And while you’re out for a walk, it may help to start thinking about what heroin has done to your life; what it’s done to your health; what it’s done to you financially; what it’s done to your relationships, and every other negative aspect of this drug. But don’t just think about the negatives; think about the positive aspects too. Start thinking about how nice it’s going to be to finally be off of this drug for good; how nice it’s going to be to finally be free – no more being a prisoner to heroin. |
Think about how nice it’s going to be to make your loved ones happy and give them peace of mind. Think about how nice it’s going to be to get your health back; how nice it’s going to be to start earning and saving up money. Think about how nice it’s going to be to buy some new stuff, clothes, shoes, etc… Think about how nice it’s going to be to get your life back on track and become a new you – a drug-free you.
Start thinking about all the positive aspects of staying clean and all the good things that are going to come from quitting heroin, once and for all. Don’t just think it, but picture it in your mind. The more you see it, then the more real it becomes. Therefore, focus on the positives and focus on the rewards.
You can go for a walk in the park with a friend. You can take a seat on a bench and do some people watching, or you can bring some bread and feed the birds. If you have any trails by your house then you can take a hike down the trails. If you live in the city, then you can take a walk around the block. If you have a bike then you can go for a bike ride as well. You can go to the mall and walk around. And if you have any money, then you can buy yourself something nice; a pair of shoes, a shirt, an outfit, etc. And if you’re a woman then you can go and get your hair done or get your nails done or both.
If there are any NA or AA meetings going on then you can go to a meeting. (Make list of meeting locations and schedules so you can always know where and when meetings are taking place). You can also take a walk to your local Redbox booth to rent and watch a movie in order to deter yourself from thinking of using. Watching a good, relaxing movie or TV show will give you enough time to relax and deter yourself from giving into cravings.

Taking deep breathes can increase anxiety for some, but sitting down and trying to breathe slow and normal may help you to calm down and reduce those cravings and anxiety as well. You may want to experiment with different breathing techniques to see which ones help and which ones don’t. But trying to breathe normal can help you to relax and beat those cravings as well. 1. Breathe in through your nose for 4 seconds.
2. Hold your breath for 3 seconds.
3. Breathe out through your mouth for 7 seconds.
Repeat this a few times until you’re feeling calm and relaxed.
